But to be aware of our roots also matters. Sanghol Times News is inspired by the rich heritage of the 4000-5000 year old historical village named Sanghol which is a historical village located in Fatehgarh Sahib District of Punjab, India predating to Harrapan civilisation. It is also known as Uchha Pind Sanghol. It is about 40 km from Chandigarh on the way to Ludhiana and approximately 10 km from Dholewal. This place holds a special position on the archaeological atlas of India. Excavations at the site have yielded coins and seals related to Toramana and Mihirakula belonging to central Asia. A Buddhist stupa was excavated in 1968, but in February 1985 a rich treasure of 117 beautiful carved stone slabs, which includes 69 pillars, 35 crossbars, figures and figurines, was excavated by the experts of the Directorate of Archaeology, Punjab. Scholars have explained them as Kushan sculptures of the Mathura school of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD…).
Great Stupa in Sanchi, MP
Stupas was a mound-like structure erected in ancient times to commemorate the death of an important person. The construction of stupas was popularized by Buddhists who worshiped it as a symbol of Buddha’s Nirvana. It is said that the Mauryan king Ashoka built about 8000 stupas all over India. Gradually, among the Buddhists, stupa evolved from a burial mound to an object of worship. Originally, stupa was a simple clay mound which regularly developed into a large structure. In a pre-developed form there are individual parts :-
An adenoma or semi circular dome resting on a central or curved drum. The central pillar of the canopy covered by a series of canopies or a single canopy, known as a dome canopy, is the Yasti, rolled in a stone base, the harmika, which is surrounded by a square railing – Vedika.
In Stupas two Parkarma Rastas (Pradakhva-Panth) were given, one at the top and the other at the ground level.
The overview path was at the very end (above) of Modhi and it came through the stairs (Sapna). Both the outer paths were surrounded by stone fences (Vedika). The Vedika was also made up of several auxiliary parts. It was a series of pillars, called a pillar, which was made up of three horizontal rods, one on top of the other, known as lists. These were horizontal, semi-convex or impact-shaped in cutting. The ends of these poles were fitted into a socket above the pillars. After this, up to the top of this dome, the entire composition was completed with Ushnisha or Chandoya stone. The coping stone has an inverted dot-u-shape, i.e. inverted or parabolic horizontal shape. Above them were holes for nailing iron. Which kept the adjoining stones in place. The bottom of the canopy-shaped stone also had rectangular sockets in which the upper edges of the pillars were whitewashed, thus perfecting the overall shape of the fence.
The entrance to the Stupas was through one or more doors, known as the Teran. Even today, in many places, fences have been constructed according to different types of stone handling with different stone residues.
All this was discovered during excavations carried out by the Punjab Government in 1985 in Sanghol, at Chandigarh-Ludhiana Highway about 30 km away from Chandigarh.
