In USA Valentine’s day is celebrated as National Organ Donor Day each year on 14th Feb to promote organ Donation as well
Every Day is a Valentine’s Day-Gift of Life
“On Valentine’s Day, lovers always promise each other the moon, but my better half has defined this through commitment, by sharing a major part of her liver thereby saving my life. Ever since then, this bond of love & affection has grown stronger & stronger day by day.”, says Parveen Kumar Rattan, a senior Accounts Officer, working with engineering department of Chandigarh Administration.
Roopa Arora, a local government school teacher never thought of life beyond her family and school. 13 years back, in 2011, It was love that drove the school teacher just at the age of 36 years to save her husband diagnosed with end-stage liver disease. “We both were shattered when doctors told, that liver transplant is the only cure to lead balance life. Ignoring risk to her own life, my wife took a bold decision for saving my life” says Rattan.
“I was found a perfect match when we approached Dr. Arvinder Singh Soin in Medanta, the Medicity hospital Gurugram in July 2011” says Roopa Arora. She was then strong enough with her own stand to give a new lease of life to her husband & donated 65% of her liver.
“Words can’t express how this decision has changed my journey of life.. I’m alive only because my life partner gave me major part of her liver. For me my hero is always my wife who gave me this precious gift of life on 5th July 2011. Leading a normal life with someone else’s organ is a special privilege for me. So many people remain on waiting list for an organ in hospitals and never get a second chance to life like me I am very lucky who got so much love from my wife through the gift of life. .. It was very difficult for me to regain this lost battle of life as I was always lying on bed. My wife’s courageous decision made it easy for me. I’m always thankful for her courage and affection by stepping up like this, is the real testament to our relationships which have grown stronger & stronger day by day.”
“Everyday is a valentine day for us. Every day you live is a blessing but we ignore it. Extra ordinary things always happened to us since then. And this special love has now given a different meaning to our lives in an extraordinary way. Ever since this major surgery was performed, we never looked back. We became the first Indian couple to participate in Transplant Games of America in 2018 & World Transplant Games 2019 held in UK. For which health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan awarded ua too,” says Rattan. “I participated in Guinness Book of World record event held at Chicago for the largest gathering of living donors worldwide in April 2018. When someone asked why I did & what I did, I reply it is only the love,” says Roopa softly. “It has changed our motive of leading rest of our lives. Now serving the humanity seems to be a better way. It is our passion now to return something back to the society. We together completed 2 post graduations together one in mass communication and journalism and another one master’s degree in social work in addition to doing government jobs” says Roopa Arora.
“I always appreciate the decision of my wife risking her life insurance for partners help and well-being as her top priority. This not only save only my life but also our love give birth to another life our son born after transplant. Such miracles happen out of love and affection and when love conquers mind of both the partners”, says Mr Rattan
Both Roopa and Rattan are now strongly campaigning for organ donation with the local organ registry Rotto to achieve their mission organ donation so that no one dies while awaiting organs at the end stages of organ failure. We always pray people please “Do not carry your organs to heaven as god knows we need them here”
